Successful Member - Missionary Work

"Don't worry about being successful. We are going to be successful - there is no doubt about it. The Lord has sent [you] to earth at the time of the harvest. He does not expect [you] to fail. He has called no one to this work to fail. He expects [you] to succeed"

Jul 7 2008

Well, this week was still the same. I heard an elder say that the new President said that areas have more success when your in the area longer. I think he won't do very many changes in the future.

Today we went to Chilascó - more waterfalls. There is a tunnel that the water goes into and the river goes like 60 meters before coming out. Needless to say, I have more pictures.

Also I recieved my package and camera. 2 weeks! How did you send it?? (In the flat rate envelope for $11.95) I don't have my adapter this week so I wasn't able to upload pictures yet.

Sorry to hear about Kim and Josh. He can always join leaching and sleep all day!! that works for some people ;)

anyway. maybe I will send some pictures some time. I lowered my resolution so hopefully I can send more each week.

thats all....Elder Taylor Wood

Letter to Elder Wood

I came across your blog chronicling your son Taylor's missionary service. I am sorry he is having such a difficult and challenging time in the missionfield. I actually served in Nacahuil from July 2003 until Nov. 2003. It was a very strenuous and adversity-filled experience as there were only two members in the area at the time, who for some reason became very antagonistic towards my companion and I. Following Nov. 2003, the area was closed. When I left the mission field in Nov. 2004, the area had yet to be re-opened.

My last area was actually in Salama so as of now I have had two of the same areas as Elder Wood. I also had many areas close to Elder Wood's first area of Paraiso III as I was assigned in various parts of Zone 18 in Guatemala City.

Please let Elder Wood know that I, as a returned missionary who served in the Guatemala Guatemala City North Mission came out alive and well. I completely understand many of the frustrations he has expressed in his correspondence with you and your family. However, if he continues to serve, the experience will of course still be stressful and challenging at times, but it will get better. I can personally, from first hand experience, attest to that statement. If I can be of any help to you, your family or Elder Wood regarding mission information, insight or advice just let me know.

I hope Elder Wood continues to serve, there are many honest in heart within the mission boundaries who need to hear his testimony both those who are and are not yet members of the Church. Best wishes always.

Regards,
Ryan S. Hansen

Vera Paz

Baja Verapaz

Baja Verapaz is the cradle of the Rabinal Achi´, the epic poem that is one of the most important works of the pre-Columbian period.

In addition to this example of ancestral culture, we find in this Department the Biota of Quetzal, one of the few protected sites that preserve some examples of the national bird and symbol with its prodigiously beautiful and colorful plumage.

Other attractions of Baja Verapaz are its archaeological sites, the powerful Matanzas River with its 225 meter waterfalls and the Chixoy River dam, surrounded by an impressive natural landscape.

Chilasco'

At Chilasco' or Dark Mountains, there is a 130 m-high waterfall, El Salto de Chilasco, one of the highest in Central America. It is on the road to Coban.

Jun 23 2008

Near Salama you can find the Mario Dary Rivera Nature Reserve ( Biotopo del Quetzal ) which was established to protect the quetzal bird, revered by the Maya and the national bird of Guatemala. There are nature paths through the cloud forests where you can see orchids, ferns and bromeliads, owls, hummingbirds and toucans. Even though sighting a bright red and green quetzal bird is a rare event, the area is a paradise not to be missed.

How I Taught the Big Guy a Lesson

Elder Kolton Bundy came home this week. This is the story he used in his talk. I loved it. (Mom)

“I did not provoke the fight, so I feel no remorse for what I was forced to do. We were arguing and, seeing that I was right and he was wrong, he decided to fight to cover for his stupidity. He swung at me first, but being in top condition, I was able to block the punch neatly with my head. Whereupon I jumped to the ground, knocking him down on top of me. Then I placed my ear in his mouth and poked his finger several times with my eye. His teeth hurt so much from the strength of my ear that he became irate and tried to kick me, but I cleverly blocked the onslaught with my ribs and face.

“I scrambled to my car in hopes I would get away and save this man from my deadly hands. Before I could start the car, he pulled me from the still-open door. I then proceeded to swing at him, but only managed to hit myself in the head. To this I said,’what’s this? Two against one?’ that was the final straw. I lost all control. There will be no mercy! Taking him in my death grip, I pounded him in the knee with my stomach then hit him two or three times in the fist with my teeth.

After that, he didn’t even try to pick me up off the ground, he was to chicken.”

It’s all in how you look at life!

Laundry

Women from Santiago Atitlán make daily trips to the lakeside, just below the village, to wash clothes by hand amid the pirogues that the men of the village use for fishing.

Transfers - But Staying

PHOTO: Byron, who is leaving for his mission in Ecuador on August 21.

First of all. I will get my shoes resouled. its raining alot and im going to start breaking in my boots. i think we should hold off on the shoes. but send the camera ASAP. Mine is shot. it doesnt take pictures anymore.
I recieved my ankle braces last week. so i thought i would give them a try. two days later my ankle caved again. Pretty minor but it put me back a day or two. I like the smaller one better because I can wear it anywhere, anytime. How long do i take the pills? (they will help strengthen your connective tissue. Continue taking them as long as you need added help)
Sounds like gas sucks. its about 36Q (7.5=1) ($4.06)
This week was fine. We had changes and I am still in SALAMA Baja verapaz.. you can google baja verapaz its like a state in the usa. We had to travel about 1.5 hours away for a babtism for another area. It was in the river. we have a black market here. they just close a street every monday and friday, every just goes to town.
Anyway. i dont know what else to write about. questions are always good.

June 2 08

The baptism.. His name is Juan Carlos, and he is 11 years old. we just tought him and we was really a great investagator. goes to all activities and everything.

I sang in zone confrence. In a cortet. 2 weeks ago. And today we played soccer for 2 hours. man i didnt know soccer could be fun. but i scored 2 goals and had an assist.

its still pretty tough. we have a kid prepareing for his mission and he helps us alot. anyway he comes with us every day, but they kinda zone me out cause i cant speak Spanish.

Also with my shoes. Did you have to pay? (no) they have a 2000 mile warenty on them. so you shouldnt have to pay. the should also send them to me. i have my other pair so i should be good till they get here.

DID you get my package yet? (no) i sent it like a month ago.

You might have to just try to figure out the pictures and who is in them etc.

Um, things are still the same. i just eat, teach, and sleep.

Stung by a wasp

Another week is gone. Yesterday i had a funny experiance. we have mangos like crazy. if you want one all you have to do is throw a bad mango at the tree and 5 good ones fall down. I had the misfortunine of almost hitting a wasp nest. well a savage beast landed on me and stabbed my right about my eyebrow. today its pretty swollen.

Mom did you call missionarry mall_ they probably want pictures. have at them they are on the website

Anyway we had a babtism this week. Juan Carlos Age 11. That went well.

I saw the hugest cow the other day.

We had our zone confrence this week as well.

I have a few pictures on blaines website. mostly just the best ones right off the bat.

my link to moms blog doesnt work.

Thats about it. I bought a hammik. And it rained 8 hours yesterday. i also bought somethign called a corte for 300 Quetz *7.6 quetz is 1 dollar* its 8 meters long and its basically hand woven fabric.

Wow i have nothing else i guess.

What's the Price of Milk?

Well this week was alright. for pday 3 elders saw a members place and their was an electric guitar, drums and a bass. out of 8 elders i guess we had a drummer, and two guitar players. they jammed out for like 2 hours just putting music together. we might have a baptism this week but all our others have failed, we will see what happens. Im sorry the family is having such a problem with my problems. We have interviews tonight and i will talk to the president.
Maybe you could have had more parties, made me get out more. but things just happen. All you can do is DONT look back, because when you do you have regrets, and all they do is hold u back.
Maybe you did pray something to happen. I prayed to get shot in Paraiso and not die, to get poisoned, to have my health decline so i can return. have my body have problems with the food . nothing happened.
Two days ago a guy came really fast around a corner in a nice truck and tried to hit us. when he missed us, swirved and he slammed on the brakes (we thought it was a punk kid) and waited for us (but at that point we just thought he was out of control) well he started screaming in English and Spanish anything that is imaginable. well at that point i thought my pray was going to be answered. but he drove off, and i thought he was coming around for another try. Things just happen right? even in a good town...
I'm sorry that its so hard on you. but its not you thats doing anything, its me. and i don't want to continue. i don't care if i come home, go to Arizona, or any other place, just not here.
I will talk with the president, how I'm feeling ETC, as u said its between him and I.
as for the work people don't go to church. we have had 5 baptism dates just sitting around because they cant or wont go to church.
Hows the gas prices? Milk prices? anything else that has changed since i left? i think thats all i got for now.

Antigua Guatemala

Antigua Guatemala is the colonial capital of Guatemala, Central America's most populous country and a likely jumping off point for any visit to the country. This city of 42,000, ringed by three majestic volcanoes, is a haven of cobblestone streets and Spanish-language schools, of open-air cafés, gardens, and atriums hidden behind the heavy wooden doors of restored Spanish mansions. "Antigua is a walker's paradise," says writer Carl Hoffman. For the May/June 2008 issue of Traveler, Hoffman and photographer Peter McBride join an expat living in Antigua to embark on a back-roads adventure to find the hidden Guatemala, going far off the tourist trail.

Reminder

Taylor, you are one of my choice sons and I expect great things of you. I expect you to be a missionary. Satan is going to try to tempt you and keep you from accomplishing the goals you set for yourself but he will have no power over you.

Reread the letter I sent to you earlier.

Love,
Heavenly Father

Happy Mother's Day

It was wonderful and not so wonderful to speak with Taylor Sunday evening. The connection was terrible and we couldn't hear very well at all, but it was great to visit with him. All of the kids came home to be here when he called. They know he is struggling and wanted to be here to offer support and love. Joanna even came to our house when her family probably really wanted her to be with them for her birthday.
We took a family picture of us all together and thanks to modern technology we even painted Taylor in with us and it made it a perfect Mother's Day.

Elder Wolford

ElderWolford, from Salt Lake has been out 18 months. he is sick (this is a good thing, and means really really good) at the guitar, and has alot of faith. and emergency transfer is when well, someone gets run over by a bus and the new elder cant work the area because he has no idea whats going on. so the president takes a few elders and moves them around where he sees fit. so about 6 elders can be switched around for one emergency. so if an elder has cancer and goes home. if his companion knows the area the president just pulls one elder from a trio and puts him there. my comp wasnt the comp to the one who had cancer (if that makes sense) he was just one elder president pulled to make things work. i am in the zone Colban, area SALAMA, (Baja verapaz is the name of the area ) i am about 2.5 hours out of the capital. my area has a few good sized stores. a street with a flea market and a place where there are houses outsize of the little city.

Elder Madsen

Elder madsen is from california and has been out 17 months, he experiances no pain and always carries 2 knifes with him at all times, Mostly because he has been shot at. he is a go getter. I learned that public transportation sucks. he is very determined especially since he only has a few changes. after my comp got ran over a guy took us down in his SUV. we didnt give him a blessing untill the hospital, when your toes are open fractured and shattered and gussing blood we just decided to get him back ASAP. i had to help him and basically lost sleep from what i saw. we had 3 other people helping us

More Trouble

I honestly dont know what to do for the phone call. my last number was 4144-9921 i think my new one is 4144-9926. I dont have a cell phone. just a phone between the companionship.

This week was crazy. Starting with last monday. Mom i think you should research the transportation of guatamala. to sum it up. CRAM EVERYONE IN, well we only have a bus that goes our way every hour. So basically me and my comp had our TOES on the step of the bus, hanging out holding onto bars outside. Well try that for 30 min and it gets pretty exausting. Needless to say my comp fell of, got ran over, shattered his middle 3 toes, and had an open fracture on two of them. blood was coming out of his shoe. i spent 3 days in the hospital and they pinned two of the toes and they will be alright. as for the second toe (thats the pointer finger on the RIGHT toe) anyway it didnt have circulation and they did or will cut it off. I dont really know! I go back to the hospital today. i think they will only cut off half of it though.
the rest of the week we ran around like little chickens. to our area, and 30 min away to ours. needless to say, im beat and have no money.
and today. well the people went on strike because they raised the price of the busses, from 2Q to 3Q 7.6 = 1 dollar. anyway they had the roads blocked off with whatever they could find. and the people wouldnt let us pass. and if we did pass they would hate missionaries forever. well the news castors finally came and we bailed. we hiked about 2.5 hours around the mountian, and another 2 to the capital.
but i will be in the hospital for a few days. i hope.

As for my new area, i cant take it. to many hills. it doesnt matter if i spend 25 hours a day doing ankle rehab if im walking on roads made of rocks the size of basketballs. I rolled my other ankle today but luckly it wasnt the bad one, im a huge guy and its hard on my knees.

anyway, that about sums up the week.

I dont know what to do about the phone call.

San Jose Nacahuil

San Jose Nacahuil is about one hour north of the capital, Guatemala City, over winding roads which are only intermittently asphalted. Distance-wise, it is only 18 kilometers. Statistics say that 70 percent of the folks here cannot read or write.

New Area - Nacahuil

well i got my area... its about an hour ride on a bus out of the capital on a huge mountian. my comp is elder madsen, my area is Nacahuil (knock a will). anyway my new district leader is a real jerk, so i only got about 15 to 30 min this week cause we missed the bus that only goes every hour.

My last area? Most dangerous area in central america, on elder was there for 6 months and over 100 ppl were killed. but i saw nothing. except a dead dog. And to tell ya the truth. I want to go back.

Um.. as for my foot. I soaked it one night and put cotton in it. after that my toe hardened up and well, i got sent to Sutherland, Nothing except little stores with candy. I dont know what else to do. It doesnt hurt when i walk on it. and i believe i got all the puss out. anyway i dont know.

my camera broke this week. it was in my bag and somehow the screen got broke. so i cant see what i am taking pictures of or what i just took.

Well. I am trying to survive. Anyway i will email you guys next week. nothing much here.

I guess no photos this week.

sry!

Alright.. sorry i stiffed ya but its ok. we went to the temple today so we were hard working yesterday. we had to wake up at 3. Last monday we had a little earthquake. we were in the middle of a prayer and my couch was moving. i thought it was my comp being a jerk. the ground just shook a little bit for 30 seconds. pretty awesome though. I bought two cans of A and w root beer... the mt dew was in. some kind of one time thing from an import store.
Basically the president told me ¨There are other places in the mission than just the capitol. I know your area is hard, in fact its the most dangerous area in central america, and you havnt been about to talk to your companion much. Thats why i am pulling you out. your getting a change.¨ I am for sure getting a gringo (greenie green) anyway i think i will go to colban or peten. but thats just me. I dont have fleas anymore and my feet are doing PERFECT with the adition to a few things.
My area was good, they say its dangerous but i havent seen anything. no babtisms this change
Also there might be a chance within the next 3 or 6 months that i will go to an area called polochic or smoething .... I would have to learn an ancient language called cetch chi. no promisesm, i dont really wana go.. i wana get spanish. anyway i will email you more if i remember what it was about. my mind is fried.

Paraiso III

Paraiso means Paradise. It's a small part of the capital. There are no big stores just small stores with candy in them. It is so dangerous because there is a gang called 18 diesiocho. well in order to get into the gang you have to kill people. other areas are dangerous but its just gangs killing gangs. paraiso III is where the are gang members are born. meaning they have to kill people. one elder was there for 6 months and over 100 people were murdered. The police have a camp right outside the area and on the main road you can almost ALWAYS see a police officer with a fully auto- i dont know if there is hope for the area. i dont if you mean for the church or what your after.

Law of Nature

A chicken hatching out of its egg is an amazing thing to observe. It is not a quick process, as the little chick begins first to peck at the egg until finally a crack begins to appear. It then must continue pecking, struggling, and working until finally the chick is able to immerge from the shell that for a time nurished it, but is now holding it back.

Nature has provided only one safe way for the new baby chick to survive. It is not an easy thing to watch as this young one struggles so obviously. But if someone intervines and helps the chick by breaking the egg, it will not have the strength to survive in its new world. It is in struggling that it becomes strong enough to survive. Any interference from the outside will in the end be distructive to the emerging chick.

It is because of the struggling that the chick has strength to survive.

Mom's Thoughts

We have been praying for a few weeks now for Taylor. He explains himself pretty well in the letters from the past few weeks. Start reading from March 31 and work your way backwards for a flow of the events.

Taylor was able to get ahold of Blaine on MSN. He told him that he wanted to come home but didn't know if he would even be welcomed. I think we have put those fears down. He is welcome no matter which way his chooses.

Life is tough and both choices will have some pretty grown-up consequences. President Coleman is willing to work with him and after talking to him just once made a big difference. He is concerned that Taylor is with a companion that speaks little English and that Taylor may be very lonely. His companion also works extremely hard - a real go-getter and would push Taylor to the limits and maybe beyond. Taylor has also been close to scenes of violence and may be fearing for his safety.

We will continue to pray, and fast. We would appreciate your prayers in Taylors behalf. We hope he will have a change of heart; that he will start to love his mission, that he will be excited to finish his mission in two years and that he will find joy and happiness in Guatemala.

Life is hard for everyone as they change from youth to adult. Growing pains are real but necessary. As Taylor struggles, we know that this struggle is one of the very things that will help define who he will become. With God's help he will surmount this challenge and emerge stronger and better for it.

Elder Argumeda

Elder Argumeda was really good elder who worked hard and could contact people really well. He liked soccer and we played in the street with garbage and try to get it between their legs. I learned how to contact and basically speak Spanish. It was hard to communicate with him because I spoke English to him and he spoke Spanish to me and it did get easier the last week.

Another Week - Discouraged again

well another week gone. Kinda sucked. it was one of those when you dont get many things done. No babtisms yet.

I always knew my area was dangerous. in fact i knew it was the most dangerous zone in the mission. But its also the most dangerous area in guatamala. probably just a rumor or word on the street. but its definatly the most dangerious area in the mission. i dont feel threatned at all. except at night, and in the day. and mornings, hahahaha just kidding.

No baptisms yet. we were running short on contacts so we decided to knock doors. we found one lady who had prayed 2 days earlier for elders or someone to find her. we gave her a blessing the next day. following that we gave 2 more blessings to a family.um..

ya im gona stick it out a little longer. after talking to my president i was like YEAH lets go. but i still hate it. my comp speaks like no english and i dont speak spanish. I ask him in spanish and he looks at me like im stupid. so i ask in english and he says YEAH. when its like what did we just talk about.

No luck with the server in delta. can someone please restart the server monday morning next week.um... man i dont know what else to write about. I guess thats all this week.Untill next time

Still No Improvement

Man today sucked. My zone had some brilliantly stupid idea to climb a mountian. Needless to say. i made it. my feet hurt. and boy do i have blisters. then it started pouring. so we ran to our cooks house soaking wet. after an hour of the hardest rain i have ever seen. we returned to our appartment only to relize it was flooded.

My mission president called me yesterday. he said we were going to talk tomorrow at zone confrence. Kim as for an april fools joke. Gotchya!! APRIL FOOLS DAY!!! No seriouslly i didnt even know easter had passed till like 4 days after. i acknowledged st. patricks day. but didnt let much happen. But as for this, This is real.

This week was just another week. nothing much happened. as for everyone else. thanks for the prayers. Yes i have a testimony of the BOM. and joseph smith. Families, plan of salvation. ETC. Um... i honestly dont know what else i can write about without repeating myself last week. Thoughts are still the same. Going to talk to my president tomorrow and on the 18th-

when is mothers day. I could let that holiday slip by as well. Um. I Still continue to work hard no matter what the tribulation.I honestly have no clue what else to write. So untill next time.Elder Taylor Wood
